A group of pupils from Feltham who were at risk under achievement, have transformed their lives as a result of visiting a school for severely disabled students in India last month.

The group of 15 to 16 year olds from Feltham Community College travelled abroad, many for the first time, to help make a difference to the remote school in Jodhpur after hearing about its plight from a fellow teacher.

The trip was organised and funded in conjunction with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and BUPA and took place during the 11 – 18 February. During the one-week trip the six pupils taught tag rugby to over 500 mixed ability students, from fifteen local schools.

Previous to the trip these students lacked motivation for their education and appreciation for their families. However this once in a lifetime opportunity enabled them to develop valuable skills: empathy and emotional literacy, as well as self-esteem, responsibility and a sense of self-worth. This was further enhanced by challenging their cultural prejudices as a result of the unexpected close bonds formed with the Indian students.

The trip proved to be a life changing experience for the group and has affected how the pupils live their lives today. Pupil Jamie Lee comments about his experience: “They treated us like royalty when they have nothing. It made me realise how lucky I am and that I should appreciate my mum more.” Fellow pupil Nikki said: “I felt guilty, as we have everything and all they have is just bricks to play with.”

The trip enabled pupils to gain a deep insight into the Indian culture and belief systems. Many found it difficult to accept that the disabled children would never be accepted in mainstream society, despite their amazing achievements and intelligence.

Trip co-organiser and teacher at Feltham Community College Lynda Harris comments: “This trip has been an opportunity of a lifetime for all involved. It has the power to not only change our lives now, but also our futures.”

The huge impact of this trip has resulted in an agreement from all involved to continue to support the school in India. Future fundraisers will be organised so that more visits can be made.

Mark Ralf, Group Purchasing and Property Director for BUPA said: “BUPA Giving was delighted to finance this international project. BUPA prides itself on its UK charitable and educational initiatives, and we are trilled to extend this reach to help others from around the world.”
