Last day in Miraflores

It’s early morning here at the hotel and we’ll be leaving shortly for our last day at work.  My post last night didn’t publish for some reason so I’ll do a quick recap before we have to leave.

Yesterday work was more of the same – brick scraping, brick carrying and lifting of beams.  No let up on the hard physical labour, however I was pleased to not be suffering from the aches and pains I had on day two.  Also the work was made more bearable by a few pleasant interruptions:

In the morning we had a surprise visit from one of the older ladies of the barrio and her daughter.  They had brought us food which they had prepared themselves from their own produce as they wanted to show us their gratitude.  It was really touching, and interesting to try the local cheese. The food certainly made a welcome break from our morning’s work.

At lunchtime we threw a birthday party for a young girl who works on the Ecuadorian construction crew (the only female on the crew and she works REALLY hard).  We had bought her a gift and a cake which was shared amongst everyone.  I also managed to find the energy for a bit of football at lunchtime so any of you Centurions reading this – don’t worry, I’m getting my training in!

We have the stereo on more or less constantly while we work and Michael Jackson is a favourite on the site.  I managed to get Lionel, one of the young Ecuadorian workers to have a little dance with me in the afternoon which was fun.  He’s really quite shy so it was good to see him showing off his moves.

Now it’s about time to hit the road, we are all excited about today as it is a shorter day of work and there are all kinds of festivities planned..

A few of our group have written us a song to sing called “Super Bupa” (to the tune of Abba’s Super Trouper) as part of the proceedings.. I’m not too sure how that will go down but they’ve done an awesome job of writing verses in both English and Spanish.  We’re to practise it on the bus.

Better go…

Hope the leaving ceremony went well and that your team song went down a treat. I imagine the children will have been just as excited as last week with all their faces painted and wearing costumes. Hard to believe that another week is over and that week three volunteers will now be getting ready to make their way over. Safe travels home
