Around 30,000 young people leave school each year with no qualifications. There are many reasons why a young person might underachieve in school: emotional and behavioural problems, an unstable family home, disengagement with academic learning, or simply falling in with “the wrong crowd”. Once labelled as a ‘failure’, it can be difficult for a young student to see how they can be anything else. This is why The Prince’s Trust tackles underachievement in schools through its network of xl clubs.
Bupa is proud to support The Trust’s xl programme – an in-school personal development programme that supports pupils in a unique way. It empowers young people to play an active role in planning their club’s activities. It gives them the time and space to unearth, and address, their own personal issues, and above all, xl re-engages them with education in a way that has tangible and meaningful benefits.
- 87% of xl members go on to employment or further education
Carr Manor High School xl Club transformed a garden at Bupa’s Sabourn Court Nursing Home in Leeds. The home manager Sarah Ibrahim commented on how hard the young students had worked to create the beautiful finished project.
“We’re so grateful to them for all their efforts.” Resident Kathleen Marrows said “We love our new garden. We’re all very proud of the children”.
